A month of utter boredom .....I was absolutely jobless after having successfully completed my under graduation in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.Being a travel freak any opportunity which would keep me outdoors was gladly accepted. On one fine day my parents planned a trip to Rameswaram (pious family u see :-)).I readily agreed to go for it as I could not resist the thought of stepping out of home.(Heights of desperation to travel). Thanks to "make my trip .com" for helping us book tickets at ease ,I was bailed out from confronting world's slowest web browser "The Indian Railways.com".
Two days stay at Rameswaram was booked and we departed from Chennai Egmore station on the eve of June 21st.
Day 1
June 22nd
4.20 am : Rameswaram express safely dropped us at our destination spot. Many autowalas were eagerly waiting to provide us an expensive service .We booked a room at Geetha Deluxe earlier and the autowala promised to drop us at the lodging(500 m away from station) for a charge of Rs.50.
4.30 am : We checked-in at Geetha Deluxe, pretty comfortable lodge, we booked a non-ac room with tv for Rs750. This lodging was at a walk-able distance from Rameswaram temple .
5.30 am : We got ready to go to the temple for the shivaling darshan .According to formalities one has to visit temple between 4:00 am to 6:00 am without taking bath for the darshan.
6.10 am : We were late by ten minutes (cannot let go our Indian genes) , as a result we had to pay a penalty of seeing Lord Shiva from a very small hole, since it was crowded I had to bend , twist and try all aerobics to get god's darshan.
6.20 am : We came out of the temple after the darshan and walked to Agni Theetham which was at the vicinity of Rameswaram temple(3m to 4m away). It is believed that Rama had cleansed his sins by taking a dip in this water after having killed Ravan (Lord Shiva's Devotee) hence being theist, we followed Lord Ram and performed our morning ablution in the holy water.
6.45 am : After having cleansed our body in the holy water of Agni Theertham we stepped inside Rameswaram temple to perform our morning ablution with 22 Theerthams inside the temple. To perform this we had to bribe a temple guide with Rs 400 ,who promised to take the water (theertham) from 22 wells to assist us in cleansing our body and soul further :-). Sometimes these rituals and formalities appear funny but trust me this idea of cleansing with 22 different Theerthams is actually enjoyable and appreciated.I liked it , it was so much fun to shower in 22 different Theerthams especially when there is someone to draw water from the well and splash it on your head and your job is to stay in position to enjoy the shower:-).
7.20 am : We were done with cleansing and bathing .We changed our clothes to darshan god again after the clean up .After our conversation and request for blessings from god we stepped out of temple that is when we ran into an auto wala who convinced us a trip to eight different temples in the locality and a special visit to Dhankush kodi for Rs 500.At the end of the journey one will realize that the auto fellow pressed his business tactics on us and talked us into this journey which was not worth Rs 500, as every small temple were close by and the trip was only for a distance of 30km for Rs 500!.
Our Auto journey comprised of visiting following places:
1.Ramar Padham
2.Kodandaramaswamy tample ( On the way to Dhanush kodi)
3.DhanushKodi( Where Indian Ocean meets Bay of Bengal)
4.Lakshman theertham
5.Panchamugam Hanuman.
6.Floating feet of Ram
7.Dr Abdul Kalam's House(It is a three storey house with first floor containing Dr Kalam's achievements and second floor was a shopping center selling gift articles made of sea shell.)
3:00 pm: We were done with the local visits and came to our lodging all tired and weary.
Oops very important ! I missed out the restaurants!
There were many small restaurants few blocks away from our lodging but the good ones are Hotel Anandha Bhavan and Hotel Aaryas Residency . I loved the food at Aaryas residency and this was one decent place to eat , ambiance was very good and the food worth the money.Breakfast at Anandha Bhavan was not tasty ,but I liked the evening food .
6.30 pm: We settled at our lodging, luckily we had television at our room to entertain us .
Day 2
6.00 am: We booked a cab to visit Ramanadhapuram to visit temples there. This place was very far from Rameswaram, the cab charged us Rs 1800 for round trip.We had to go past Pamban bridge.
8.00am: We had our breakfast at Hotel Aishwariya in Ramanathapuram. Food was good there and Ramanathapuram was well developed compared to Rameswaram. It was here that we visited four temples.
1.Devipatnam
2.Uthirakosai Mangai
3.Thirupullani
4.Sethu Karai Hanuman Temple
Sethu Karai Hanuman temple was a fabulous place to visit, the temple was close to Bay of Bengal sea, water was light blue, crystal clear and cold.I wanted to stay there the entire day .It was that good!
12.00 pm: We were back to our loading. I had fallen in love with the ambiance and taste of Aaryas Bhavan ,so I talked my parents into going to that restaurant for eating lunch again .
6.00 pm: We had our dinner in advance at Hotel Anandha Bhavan before boarding the train .
8.00 pm: We left Rameswaram in Rameswaram Express.
In the train on our return,I was recollecting my experience at Rameswaram .From my stay, I would suggest every individual to visit this beautiful place irrespective of being a theist or otherwise. This place is a collection of islands and has water all around it,for some one who loves beaches and nature this is an ideal place to visit .
I will visit this place again in future to enjoy the bliss of nature which is a rarity for someone who stays in the city like me.
